Annual street race requires volunteers

Organizers need help for childrens events

Soap Box Derby is back again this year and with it will be homemade contraptions powering drivers downhill at speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour.

The entry registration deadline for the derby is Saturday, May 12. It is open to anyone aged seven years and older. Registration forms can be found at Quality Foods.

The event begins with trial runs at noon on Saturday, May 26. Festivities will start again at 8 am on Sunday, May 27 for pancake breakfast, 10 am for the Carnival for Kids and noon for the main races at Sunset Park in Wildwood.

Organizer Kathy Maitland said volunteers are needed for both events to set up, take down and to load and unload the truck, and for general help. “We can always use volunteers to run the concession, run games, just general this and that,” she said. “The more volunteers there are, the more games there are. If there aren’t enough volunteers there might only be three games and I’d like to have more than that.”

Volunteers would be required to attend the event from 10 am to 3 pm on Sunday. Anyone interested in helping can contact Maitland at 604.487.9332.
