Awards celebrate favourite food producers

Provincial competition calls for nominations

Have a favourite local sweet treat or food supplier? Then do not hesitate to nominate them for a We Heart Local Award.

The BC-wide competition is in its third year and nominations are open for 15 categories celebrating the best of local food.

“From farm to table it takes an entire community to grow local agriculture,” said Lorne Hunter, board director of the BC Agriculture Council, running the competition with non-profit community forum We Heart Local. “The We Heart Local Awards is a celebration to recognize the people and businesses who are championing the economic, social and environmental sustainability of BC agriculture.”

Nomination categories include favourite local sweet treat, favourite local brewery, favourite local u-pick farm and favourite farmers’ market among others.

“Being voted favourite local farmers’ market in 2014 showed us how valued our market is by our community,” said Randall Stasiuk, president of Prince George Farmer’s Market. “It’s time for everyone to show their local pride—let the fun begin.”

Nominators and voters are automatically entered to win weekly draws, including one of five $100-gift cards to BC wine authority stores as well as a grand prize of a three-night stay for two at Taku Resort and Marina on Quadra Island. A $3,000-BC Ferries card is included in the grand prize to cover the cost of ferry transportation.

Readers can learn more about the awards or nominate and vote for one or more of their local favourites online.

Nominations are open until September 6.
