Board governance workshops available through volunteer organization

Strong boards maintain heartbeat of each non-profit

Since its inception in 2005, Volunteer Powell River (VPR) has been wanting to assist non-profit organizations increase their knowledge of board governance. Starting January 4, 2012, the society will team up with facilitator Laura Berezan to provide a series of five workshops climbing into the heart of boardroom organization.

Berezan has a law degree and is an associate with Fleming and Associates, Barristers and Solicitors. She came to Powell River in 2010 with husband Ron and their youngest daughter.

“Laura offered her expertise, being new to Powell River and looking for ways to engage with the community,” said Dale Lawson, executive director Powell River and District United Way which maintains the VPR program.

Prior to law school, Berezan worked and volunteered in the non-profit/voluntary sector. For six years she consulted with organizations on issues related to board governance, organizational management, fund development and volunteer management.

VPR matches volunteers with non-profits requiring assistance. It works with volunteers to determine interests and skills that individuals wish to use in the community, highlighting the benefits of volunteerism. VPR also has a membership list of non-profit organizations. When organizations are looking for volunteers they work with VPR to match their requirements. Assisting non-profits by hosting workshops such as board governance helps strengthen the heart of each organization.

“Everybody can benefit from a little bit of professional development,” said Lawson, “and I think it’s important for all board members to have a solid understanding of their roles and responsibilities in becoming involved. Good governance is an important aspect in a high functioning board.”

The five workshops review legal implications of being a board member; what governance looks like in the context of a non-profit organization; how to confidently and effectively manage and control an organization; tools to write effective policies; how to work effectively with committees, staff and serving the needs of clients, patrons and members; and how to effectively build and maintain a board.

“We are always looking for ways to keep Volunteer Powell River sustainable,” added Lawson. The society’s main source of income is annual fees and these fees are kept nominal to encourage more members. As Berezan is offering this set of five workshops without charging a facilitator fee, all money collected through registration goes directly to VPR.

Each workshop is held on a Wednesday evening, starting January 4 and ending February 1. Registration fees for VPR members will be $25 per session or all five for $50 per person. For non-members the cost will be double. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. To register and for more information, interested readers can contact VPR at 604.485.2132. All workshops will take place at Cranberry Community Hall, 6828 Cranberry Street.
