Brooks Secondary School graduating class set for exciting month

Ceremony, festivities and parade all happening in June

Brooks Secondary School grade 12 students will be attending their commencement graduation ceremony at Powell River Recreation Complex (Hap Parker Arena) on June 10. This significant moment for students, friends and family will be followed by Dry Grad 2023 (these events are separate), also at the complex.

Students and families have been fundraising for graduation celebrations by selling flowers at Laszlo Tamasik Dance Academy performances, holding raffles and hosting movie nights. Generous donations from businesses in town have also contributed to the grad fund.

Brooks graduates receive four tickets for guests to attend the ceremony at the complex; additional tickets are $10 each, with doors opening at 4:30 pm and the commencement ceremony beginning at 6 pm.

Registration for Dry Grad 2023 is filling up fast, and so far, 125 hoodies (hooded sweatshirts) have been purchased, which is included in the registration fee, according to Jen Ramsay, one of Brooks graduation volunteers, and mom of graduating student Erin Ramsay.

Ramsay is also a volunteer for the Grad Parade, happening Sunday, June 25, at 11 am. Anyone interested in volunteering to help out with the parade can email [email protected].

“The route will be from Beach Gardens to Willingdon Beach, where awards will be handed out for the best-decorated vehicle,” said Ramsay. “We will gather in the Loggers Memorial Bowl area, for a fun, almost end-of-school festivities.”

Grad volunteers are hoping to get Powell River Vintage Car Club involved in the 10-kilometre procession, making the event accessible for those who may not have access to a vehicle.

“We will also have a police escort in the front of the parade,” said Ramsay.

Tickets for Brooks Secondary School grade 12 graduation ceremony can be purchased at the Brooks Secondary School office, located at 5400 Marine Avenue.
