Growing up in Powell River, Avionics Technician and Air Force Master Corporal Gordon Carey turned spending three years with air cadets into a fulfilling career.

The son of Jackie Odell, Carey is a graduate of Max Cameron High School. As a teenager he participated with 22 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron and was the cadet squadron leader with the rank of cadet warrant officer first class. He enrolled in the Canadian Army in 1986 as a radio technician and left the forces to earn a diploma in engineering technology at BC Institute of Technology. He returned to the Air Force in 2003.

HMCS Vancouver recently participated in an under surface warfare exercise with US Navy submarines off the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Carey was present during the exercise and took the opportunity to inspect the radio compartment of the vessel’s Sea King helicopter.
