Pops and bangs from fireworks are already being heard around Powell River as Halloween approaches on Wednesday, October 31.

Fireworks have been part of Halloween for decades, and residents can expect a lot of them to be going off this weekend. But City of Powell River bylaws that regulate fireworks only allow for them to be set off on the day of Halloween.

People can use fireworks under certain regulations. Any person over 18 years old can set off or explode low-hazard fireworks between the hours of 4 and 11 pm on October 31, provided the fireworks are set off or exploded in a safe manner on private property with the owner’s consent.

Federal definitions of low-hazard pyrotechnics include fireworks showers, fountains, golden rain, lawn lights, pinwheels, Roman candles and volcanoes.
