Coats for the whole family

Program organizers look for winter clothes

As fall’s chill turns toward winter’s bite, organizers behind Coats for Kids and Families are asking the community for donations of winter clothing to hand out during their annual charity event.

The community collection campaign began at the beginning of October and will run until November 11.

Organizers are asking people to donate coats, sweaters and other winter clothing. The program is a joint initiative between Powell River Lions Club and the local branch of Salvation Army.

Donated space in Town Centre Mall is being set up with racks and shelves, so on Saturday, November 17, the public will be able to come into the “shop,” browse through the clothing and choose what they think they need.

Dolly McEachren is treasurer for the Lions Club and volunteer for Coats for Kids and Families. She said she has seen people come find some clothes and then feel like they are taking too much, but she always assures them that it’s all right.

The coats and winter clothes are for families and individuals who aren’t able to buy clothing for the cold weather.

“We’re trying to supply the warm and comfortable things because if you have to choose between $5 for food or $5 for clothes, food is going to win out,” said Marilyn Brooks, Lions Club president.

While organizers are accepting coats for both adults and children, they want to encourage the community to donate coats for little children five years old and under. Often families hand down children’s coats so few are donated, said Brooks. She said they rely on cash donations to buy the coats to fill the need.

Clothing donations can be dropped off at the mall, Westview Baptist Church and Salvation Army. There will also be a collection of winter clothes at the Powell River Kings’ game on Friday, November 9.

Any winter gear is a welcome donation as long as it is clean and in good shape.

Last year organizers handed out 793 items of clothing on distribution day. Everyone is welcome to come in if they need a winter coat or other winter clothing.

The Coats for Kids and Families event is scheduled for Saturday, November 17 from 10 am to 2 pm, next to the mall’s office. Popcorn will be provided by Kiwanis Club of Powell River.
