Former Powell River resident and Miss World Canada 2012 Tara Teng has said that although she didn’t place among the top scorers, she is happy with her performance in the Miss World competition. The pageant was held in Ordos, China from July 18 to August 18.
“It was such an honour for me to represent Canada at the 62nd Miss World,” Teng said. “Coming from a small town, I never would have imagined that one day I would be competing with two billion people in 185 countries watching.”
Teng said she was grateful for the opportunity to meet new friends from around the world and travel to incredible locations throughout Mongolia and China. “But most of all,” she said, “it was a sincere honour to raise the call to end human trafficking on the world stage.”
One-hundred and sixteen competitors vied for the Miss World 2012 title. The crown went to Yu Wenxia from the People’s Republic of China.
Even though she was at a competitive disadvantage due to her short stature, Teng said she refused to allow her size to hold her back. “I hope that at the end of the day, it is...my convictions to end violence against women and child exploitation that the world will remember.”
Teng lived in Powell River for 16 years, moving to Langley in 2004 just before starting grade 11. She has said in the past that Powell River instilled in her a passion for getting involved and provided her with a strong foundation for her beliefs.
