Donation keeps ideas on track

Writers conference turns funds over to library

Powell River Public Library board and staff is grateful and honoured to have received a donation from the Powell River Writers’ Conference.

The writers’ conference delivered quality workshops to the community for eight years and brought well-known speakers such as Mike McCardell and Grant Lawrence to speak in the community. Now that the writers’ conference is dissolving its non-profit society status, members have decided to donate $1,100 to the library to further writing initiatives in the community through workshops and by bringing authors to Powell River who will share their knowledge about the art of writing.

Terry Noreault, interim chief librarian, was very pleased that the writers’ conference decided to support library programs. “I cannot stress enough the importance of writing to the programs offered by the library,” he said. “Our goal is that library programs will help Powell River become a true community of writers.”

Mark Merlino, adult services coordinator, who runs many of these programs, added, ”The library goes to great lengths to seek out and invite authors and publishers who give readings and workshops in our community.”

The library coordinates writing-related programs for Powell Riverites of all ages, from toddlers and teens through to seniors. “There is an incredible number of talented writers who live in Powell River,” said Merlino. “In the near future, with the new library, we will be able to better serve them through more hands-on workshops that will facilitate their writing, publishing and sharing of their work. I am positive that those involved with the writers’ conference will feel at home in the new library.”
