Expert exposes breast cancer with hope for the future

Nobody wants to hear the news that cancer has appeared in their body, but for some this is reality and a great deal of how life changes from that point on depends upon the person’s view of the future.

There are many questions to be asked, tests, surgery and treatment to endure, and a long road to recuperation. Each person’s journey is unique and yet nobody is alone. In Canada, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women, according to the Canadian Cancer Society. The society estimated that in 2011 more than 23,000 women would be diagnosed with the disease.

Breast cancer is not limited to women. Roughly one per cent of breast cancer diagnoses occur in men.

Anyone affected by breast cancer, whether as a survivor or support member, will be interested in attending a free forum provided by Dr. Karen Gelmon, professor of medicine at University of British Columbia and medical oncologist at BC Cancer Agency. Gelmon will speak from 7 to 8 pm on Thursday, May 17 at Beach Gardens Resort and Marina, providing information about breast cancers, treatments, answering questions and looking to the future.

Gelmon received a YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association) Woman of Distinction award in 2003, is the mother of two daughters and volunteers on boards for the arts and community in Vancouver.

Gelmon leads committees and councils across Canada relating to breast cancer and is well known nationally for her publications and research.

Anyone wishing to attend the forum is asked to RSVP to 604.485.3277 or email [email protected].
