Faiths can come together

Interfaith fair brings groups to one place

It is rare to see multiple faiths under one roof. In a world where religions often conflict, they seldom put aside differences and promote acceptance.

But at the Interfaith Fair...Believe It or Not held on Saturday, April 21, they will be doing just that, said Evangeline MacDonald, fair coordinator with Powell River Diversity Initiative.

“It’s the very first of its kind in Powell River,” she said. “We have at least 25 faith groups. There will be an open panel discussion and the question being asked is: Is there a difference between spiritualism, faith and religion?”

The fair will be held at Dwight Hall in Townsite, where there will be free food and drinks throughout the day and admission is also free. A youth area will have activities, games and conversation with a multi-faith table. MacDonald said the fair is family-friendly, open to everyone and is meant to “increase awareness and understanding in our community. You don’t have to be religious to come to our event, you just have to be curious.”

There will also be free transportation provided by Salvation Army, from Powell River Town Centre Mall to Dwight Hall and out to Tla’Amin (Sliammon) First Nation.

MacDonald invites anyone interested in the fair to volunteer. A volunteer meeting will be held at 4:30 pm on Thursday, March 29 at Powell River Employment Program Society. The society is located at 4727 Marine Avenue above the Bank of Montreal.

The fair takes place from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. For more information, interested readers can contact the diversity initiative at 604.485.2675 or by email at interfaith@prepsociety.org.
