Farmers Market open for another season

Locally grown farm-fresh organic fare awaits

It’s that time again. April 30 marks opening day for Powell River’s Open Air Farmers’ Market. Through to October, shopping takes place at the market from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm on Saturdays and 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm on Sundays. As always, there will be a wide variety of in-season produce, prepared foods, cold and hot drinks, arts and crafts, pony rides and activities for all ages to enjoy.

Farmers’ markets are a proven, traditional method of delivering fresh, high-quality produce and homemade goods directly from farmers and artisans to consumers. The market helps maintain strong social ties in the community by bringing consumers and farmers together in a mutually rewarding exchange.

Since wholesale costs are often close to the cost of production, the market is a good way to help local farmers stay in business by avoiding the costs of a middleman. Since it comes directly from the farm, the market gives farmers the opportunity to pick in-season produce at the peak of its flavour and nutritional value.

Local foods also help preserve natural resources. The difference in mileage saves on fossil fuels, and the preservation of farmland is important for the health of the environment and water supply. Sustainable farming practices conserve soil and clean water, while also providing a habitat for wildlife.

There are a number of exciting new vendors who have joined the market community this year, including a vast array of organic produce, meat, meat pies, fresh pasta, preserves, Thai food and more. The market is also hosting “kids’ market days” on the second Sunday of each month this year. (Rain date is always the following Sunday.) Children up to 18 years old, are invited to bring a blanket to display items that they would like to trade or sell. Children may bring arts and crafts, games, books, trading cards, toys and more, but no food items. There is plenty of room in the big field on the grounds, but don’t forget to arrive early for a good spot.

There will also be a number of special event days hosted by the market this year, such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Canada Day, and “A Midsummer Night’s Feast,” which is a special evening market on BC Day to profile the talents of some of Powell River’s finest culinary artists with a focus on local organic foods. There will be plenty to eat and local musicians to enjoy.

For farmers and consumers alike, the market is a social place to celebrate food, sustainability and a healthy lifestyle.
