Wu Woom returns for second year seeking performers

For the second year in a row, the Wu Woom Festival will celebrate diversity and raise money for community activities.

Cyndi Pallen from Tla’Amin (Sliammon) Community Health Services said they are also looking for more performers and fundraisers to participate in the festival, which will be held on Friday, March 30.

“People who can sing or dance in their own culture,” she said, which includes drummers, guitarists or international dancers. “We are seeking self-directed, self-motivated people for fundraising events.”

Last year, there were performers from Tla’Amin, Vietnam, Korea, Colombia and Canada. Local artists were able to display and sell artwork. This year’s festival will be similar. Pallen said it is a way of getting involved and raising money for activities within the community and is being made into an annual event.

“The event is open to the whole community of Powell River,” she added.

Funds raised from the festival go to various band-supported activities. These programs are meant to improve the community and promote healthy living, Pallen said.

The event begins at 7 pm at Sliammon Salish Centre gymnasium. Adult tickets cost $10 per person or $12 if purchased at the door. Children get in for $5 and childcare will be provided at the event. Tickets can be purchased at community health or the Tla’Amin band office.
