Firefighters from Powell River Fire Rescue are, once again, letting their mos grow during November.
More than 20 are participating in the annual Movember campaign to raise funds and awareness for male health issues like prostate and testicular cancer, depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder to name a few.
This is the fifth year the firefighters have grown moustaches during the month of November.
Auxiliary firefighter Darryl Jackson is mo-team leader for the fire hall.
The team has, for the second year, produced a calendar to help increase their donations.
Each month of the calendar has a colour photo of a team member with full growth from last year. Photos were taken by Powell River photographer Jennifer Dodd.
Jackson said last year the calendars helped the team, which was about half the size, raised close to $2,000, more than triple what they had in 2012.
The 2015 calendars are available for sale for a $20 minimum donation at Westview Ford, Valley Building Supplies, No. 1 Fire Hall on Courtenay Street, Coastal Cookery on Marine Avenue and Coast FM at Beach Gardens Resort and Marina.
In addition to the calendars, the firefighters are also involved with a number of other fundraisers throughout the month. They will be at Image 1 Salon & Spa’s shave-off party at 7 pm on Saturday, November 29 at the Carlson Community Club. The mo-team is also hosting its own Movember burger and beer fundraiser at Coastal Cookery from 6 to 9 pm on Thursday, November 27. Jackson said the restaurant will be open to the public and guests will have the option of dining à la carte or purchasing a $15 ticket which will include a selection of appetizers and a drink, along with a raffle ticket for a Townsite Brewing keg party. Jackson added that there would also be other raffles that night.
“We have a few more surprises up our sleeves,” said Jackson, “but we’ll save those for event night. It promises to be a fun night.”
