Fundraising will be a fine art

Rotary Club of Powell River holds benefit for library

It has all the ingredients to be divine, coupling many of Powell River’s most accomplished artists in a fundraising auction with a wine-tasting experience featuring vivacious vintages.

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Powell River, A Taste of Art will raise money for an art installation in the new Powell River Public Library. The event is scheduled from 7 to 10 pm on Saturday, April 18, at Brooks Secondary School’s Great Hall.

Jill Ehgoetz, club president, said the reason for supporting the library was because the club realized early on that in order to raise funds through an art auction, a cause was required.

“I’m a big library fan and it kind of made sense we should pick the library,” Ehgoetz said. “We realized we needed a cause and I wanted to tie it into the artists to make them engaged in the whole process. That’s why we picked art in the library.”

Ehgoetz said the library has been very supportive of the initiative, helping advertise the event.

The arts community has provided strong backing for the fundraiser. The event website lists 35 artists who have agreed to be involved.

There will be a wide variety of art being auctioned. In addition to drawings, painting and photography, there will be a jeweller, a couple of raku artists and an artist selling decorative eggs.

The event will feature a combination of silent and live auctions.

“We’ll have all of this art displayed and silent auction for most of the pieces but we are going to reserve eight to 10 pieces that will be auctioned live,” Ehgoetz said.

She has viewed all of the art and the selection will feature a wide variety.

“We have landscapes, we have florals, we’ve got heavy equipment; in oils, watercolours, acrylics, framed, unframed, large, small, sketches—there’s a huge range,” Ehgoetz said.

The money made from the art auction will be split between the artists and the library.

Over and above the art auction there will be a wine-tasting event. Four different wine stations representing four different wine representatives will be featured. All of the wines are available locally.

The SharpFive jazz quintet will provide entertainment. Vancouver Island University’s culinary arts students will prepare hors d’oeuvres for those in attendance.

Tickets are $35, include four wine-tasting coupons, and are available at Breakwater Books. Rotarians have tickets available and there is also a contact form at the bottom of the website where ticket requests can be made.

Cash, cheques or credit cards can be used to pay for items. There is no facility at the event for debit card payment.
