Gingerbread confections raise money for burn victims

Creative structures attract viewers

A gingerbread contest  will once again raise money for the Professional Firefighters Burn Fund.

The Gingerbread Contest is sponsored by Powell River Town Centre Hotel. Individuals, organizations and companies in Powell River are invited to enter the contest. As well, hotel staff will be participating.

Last year, the hotel donated nearly $1,300 to the burn fund. “This year we are hoping to top that,” said Shelley Halliday, general manager of the hotel. “The gingerbread contest has been a popular community event for the past four years and we hope to continue and build it even larger each year.”

Gingerbread entries can be houses, other buildings or creative items such as vehicles, skating rinks, et cetera. All structures should be made primarily of gingerbread and decorated with edible materials.

All entries must be delivered to the hotel by December 1. They will be on display in the hotel lobby until the end of December.

The public votes on its favourite gingerbread creation for a minimum donation of $2 to the burn fund. On December 30, prizes will be awarded for the three most popular gingerbread creations. There will also be three names drawn from the voting ballots and prizes awarded.
