On this day:
In 1935, an estimated 1,500 out-of-work labourers from federal relief camps in BC peacefully commandeered a train and began the “On to Ottawa Trek” campaign. The protesters were joined by more people on their way east. Upon their arrival in Regina, the government insisted that the railway stop the train. Only eight trekkers went on to Ottawa for negotiations with then prime minister R.B. Bennett. Rampant unemployment and insufficient social programs were major problems for Canadians in the 1930s.

In 1956, Elvis Presley earned the moniker, Elvis the Pelvis, with his suggestive hip movements during a performance of “Hound Dog” on live television. It became his best-selling song; about 10 million copies were sold.

In 1968, United States senator Robert F. Kennedy was shot after claiming victory in California’s Democratic presidential primary in Los Angeles. The attacker, 24-year old Palestinian Sirhan Bishara Sirhan, was disgruntled by Kennedy’s support for Israel; he was arrested at the scene. The brother of former United States president John F. Kennedy died the following day.
