On this day:
In 1956, Italian liner SS Andrea Doria, which capsized and sank the following morning, and Swedish passenger ship Stockholm collided in the Atlantic ocean; 46 Andrea Doria passengers and five from the Stockholm were killed.

In 1976, Viking 1, the first space probe to successfully land on Mars, took the famous “Face of Mars” photo of the red planet’s Cydonia region.

In 1978, Louise Joy Brown, the first person to be conceived using in-vitro fertilization technology, was born in England.

In 1994, a declaration signed by Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin and Jordan’s King Hussein ended a 46-year-old state of war between the countries.

In 2000, an Air France Concorde supersonic jet, on its way to New York from Paris, crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all 109 people on board and four people on the ground.
