In 1847, the west African country of Liberia was founded primarily by freed slaves from the United States. 

In 1965, after 78 years of British rule, Republic of Maldives, a nation in the Indian Ocean, gained independence.

In 1991, Canadian singer Bryan Adams became an international superstar with his song "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" in its second week of setting records on the music charts. The song appeared on Adams’ album Waking Up the Neighbours and the Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves movie soundtrack.
