On this day:
In 1877, at the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, astronomer Asaph Hall discovered Deimos, one of the two moons orbiting Mars.

In 1939, the world premiere of the classic film The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland, took place in Wisconsin; it opened in Hollywood three days later. "Birds fly over the rainbow, why then, oh, why can't I?"

In 1994, a Major League Baseball strike halted a season when the Montreal Expos had the best record among National League and American League teams with 74 wins and only 40 losses. The Expos were deprived of the opportunity to compete for a World Series title and never repeated the success of that abbreviated season. The team moved to Washington, DC, in 2004 after struggling on and off the field for a decade.

Today’s weather:
Friday, August 12, is expected to be sunny with a high of 25 degrees Celsius during the day, dropping to 16 degrees in the evening, when cloudiness is forecast to increase. For the full 12-hour and seven-day qathet region weather forecast, go to our weather page.
