In 79 CE, Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were buried in volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted, which killed an estimated 20,000 people.
In 1814, British forces invaded and burned down the city of Washington, DC, including the White House and Capitol building. 24 hours later, after a storm led to the retreat of British troops, Americans regained control of the city.
In 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was established with Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom and the United States signing on.
In 2006, Pluto was declassified as a planet by the International Astronomical Union and reclassified as a dwarf planet.
