On this day:
In 1936, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) was established.

In 1978, after playing his first eight professional games with Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association (WHA), and scoring six points, future hockey hall of famer Wayne Gretzky was sold to the Edmonton Oilers, who were also in the WHA at the time. He was later named rookie of the year after compiling 104 points in 72 games that season.
