In 1542, Mary, Queen of Scots, was born. She was Queen of Scotland from 1542 until her forced abdication in 1567. She died in 1587.

In 1941, the United States declared war against Japan, one day after the Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbour.

In 1980, Mark David Chapman shot and killed musician and former member of The Beatles John Lennon in New York City.
