On this day:
In 1925, New York Americans and Pittsburgh Pirates combined to set an National Hockey League record by compiling a total 141 shots on goal in one game, a 3-1 win for the Americans, who outshot the Pirates 73 to 68.

In 1966, musician Jimi Hendrix penned his famous song "Purple Haze" while backstage at a club in London.

In 2004, a 100-foot-high tsunami triggered by a 9.1-magnitude earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean resulted in the deaths of more than 230,000 people, mostly in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The earthquake, considered one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent history, was the third strongest earthquake ever measured using the Richter scale.
