On this day:
In 1933, Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany. On the same day in 1945, he marked the 12th anniversary of his appointment with a speech, his last in public, and called on Germans to keep resisting in World War II until victory.

In 1948, at age 78, Indian political and spiritual leader Mohandas K. Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi, was shot and killed in New Delhi by a Hindu extremist.

In 1962, two members of The Flying Wallendas’ high-wire act died when their seven-person pyramid collapsed during a performance in Detroit.

In 1969, in what ended up being the group’s final performance in public, The Beatles staged an impromptu concert above the building in London which housed Apple Records.

In 1973, the rock group KISS, featuring Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley, performed its first show at a club in New York.
