On this day:
In 1977, 583 people died when a KLM Boeing 747, which was taking off in foggy conditions from Tenerife (Canary Islands), crashed into a Pan Am 747 waiting on the airport runway. It is the worst airline crash in history.

In 1995, Tom Hanks won his second best actor Oscar in a row, this time for his performance in the movie Forrest Gump, which also won the Academy Award for best picture. 

In 1998, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved Viagra, the first male impotence drug.
