In 1815, Napoleon Bonaparte set sail for the island of St. Helena in the Atlantic Ocean, where he remained in exile until his death in 1821.
In 1918, Canadian and Australian troops fought Germans in the World War I Battle of Amiens over four days, and were victorious, although Canadian casualties were high, with more than 11,800 killed or injured.
In 1974, United States president Richard Nixon announced he would resign the next day amid damaging Watergate scandal revelations.
