On this day:
In 1913, the bronze Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen, which was inspired by a Hans Christian Andersen story, was unveiled in the city’s harbour.

In 1966, the unmanned Lunar Orbiter 1 took the first photo of Earth from the moon’s orbit.

In 2012, Ryan Jenkins, a contestant on a pair of reality television shows who was suspected of killing his wife, Jasmine Fiore, was found hanging in a motel in Hope, BC; it was an apparent suicide.
