On this day:
In 1582, the last day using the Julian calendar was recorded in Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain. To synchronize with the Gregorian calendar, per Pope Gregory XIII, ten days were skipped. The following day in those countries was October 15.

In 1957, the Soviet Union kicked off the space race with the United States by launching artificial satellite Sputnik 1 into orbit.

In 1970, American singer/songwriter Janis Joplin was found dead in a Los Angeles hotel room. She was 27.
