On this day:
In 1863, the world's oldest underground passenger railway opened in London, England.

In 1920, the Great War, or World War 1, officially ended with the Treaty of Versailles taking effect and establishment of the League of Nations. A ceasefire had been in place since November 11, 1918.

In 1998, during a home game against Florida Panthers, Mark Messier of the Vancouver Canucks became the sixth player in National Hockey League history to record 1,000 assists.
