Powell River Regals cruise to pair of wins at home

Hockey club starts 2024 with sights set on provincial title

Powell River Regals swept a pair of games versus Nanaimo Steelmen at Hap Parker Arena last weekend as the local senior hockey team continues on-ice preparations for hosting the 2024 Coy Cup AA provincial championship in March.

Travis Granbois recorded a hat-trick and added a pair of assists to lead the Regals to an 8-4 win on Friday, January 5. Riley Billy scored twice for the home team, which led 2-0 after the first period and 6-3 after 40 minutes of play.

Brad Cimaglia, Bekkam Willis and Kyle English rounded out the scoring for the Regals. Isaac Embree and Chad Niddery each helped set up three of the goals, Brock Sawyer assisted on a pair, and Nic Porchetta and Gabe Shipley chipped in offensively with one assist each.

Goaltender Ryan Fairgray turned aside 18 shots to earn the win. Regals outshot the Steelmen 49-22.

Niddery, Billy and Granbois scored two goals each to lead the Regals to a 9-2 win the next night (January 6). Shipley, Matteo Porchetta and Cory Burnett had one goal each.

Assists were recorded by Granbois, Willis (two), Nic Porchetta (four), Billy, Embree (two), Cimaglia and Burnett.

Regals’ balanced attack resulted in three goals in each of the first two periods, and another pair in the final frame.

Laszlo Tamasik handled goaltending duties and made 29 saves, the same number as his counterpart in the Nanaimo net.
