SOCCER SUCCESS: The Steve Steele Memorial Boxing Day soccer match raised funds for both the Salvation Army on Joyce Avenue, and Powell River Action Centre Food Bank on Alberni Street. An important annual event for the qathet soccer community took place on December 26, 2023, at Timberlane Park. According to longtime soccer player, coach and retired teacher Dave McMaster, the Steve Steele Memorial Boxing Day soccer match brought out hundreds of fans to cheer on Powell River Villa and Stevie's Stealers.

Boxing Day match

The fun game between drop-in soccer league players and the Villa competitive/recreational team raised funds for the Salvation Army and the Food Bank Action Network. The storm that knocked the power out for many residents on Christmas Day was over on game day, and conditions were perfect for spectators and players, according to McMaster.

Raised funds for charity

The game raised a total of $2,520, with $1,260 going to each charity.

"We probably had the best turnout in years, and it probably had to do with the weather; it was clear and sunny," said McMaster. "Villa won 4-1, but they are expected to win."

Villa vs Steelers

McMaster said folks who play in the drop-in-league are selected to play in the Boxing Day charity game, including the league’s captain Valerie Harding. McMaster said Harding is an exceptional player and captain, but not the only female player.

Lifetime award

Every year, at the memorial boxing day soccer match, the community recognizes extraordinary people. Soccer coach, player and teacher Cam Miller was given a lifetime service award along with McMaster. Both were recognized for their longtime service for playing and coaching soccer in the qathet community.

"We thank all the players and fans for their wonderful donations, "said McMaster. "It's [about the game], not about me or Cam; it's about raising funds for those who need it in the community."
