On this day:
In 1986, New York Islanders' winger Mike Bossy became the first National Hockey League player to score at least 50 goals in nine straight seasons.

In 1990, Lithuania declare its independence from the Soviet Union.

In 2011, in the worst nuclear accident since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in Russia, a magnitude-9.0 earthquake and resulting tsunami struck Japan’s northeastern coast, killing nearly 20,000 people and severely damaging the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power station.
