On this day:
In 1781, the third largest planet by radius in the solar system, Uranus, was discovered by German-born British astronomer William Herschel.

In 2004, Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti performed in Tosca, his last opera, in New York. The famous singer died in 2007.

In 2013, Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio from Argentina) succeeded Pope Benedict XVI, becoming the 266th leader of the Catholic Church.
