On this day:
In 1892, Lord Stanley of Preston pledged to donate a challenge cup for the best ice hockey team in Canada. The Stanley Cup is now the National Hockey League’s championship trophy.

In 1965, over a 12-minute span, Russian cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov became the first person to walk in space when he went outside the Voskhod 2 spacecraft, which was orbiting earth.

In 2017, rock ‘n’ roll guitarist and singer Chuck Berry died at his home near St. Louis at age 90.
