On this day:
In 1812, an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale caused an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 deaths in Caracas, Venezuela, and destroyed 90 per cent of the city.

In 1979, a peace treaty was signed by Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin in Washington, DC.

In 1997, the National Hockey League announced  that Anaheim Mighty Ducks and Vancouver Canucks would open the following season with a pair of games in Japan.

Four hockey teams will compete for the Coy Cup provincial championship starting today (Tuesday, March 26) at Hap Parker Arena.
