On this day:
In 1940, classic cartoon character Bugs Bunny appeared for the first time in A Wild Hare.

In 1890, Vincent Van Gogh shot himself in the chest; the famous painter died two days later.

In 1996, Canadian sprinter Donovan Bailey set a new world record of 9.84 seconds en route to winning the gold medal in the 100-metres at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, becoming the first Canadian to win the race since Percy Williams in 1928. 

In 1999, skateboarder Tony Hawk landed a "900", the first in the sport to accomplish the feat.
