Help is close at hand

Medical alert program being provided through St John Ambulance

When an elderly person falls at home, it could be a long time before somebody arrives to help. With St. John Ambulance’s new First Call Medical Alert Program, a fall can be detected and somebody can be on their way to assist within minutes.

Through first call, St. John Ambulance provides education on fall prevention and home safety. Unique to the program is the waterproof fall detector, a help button worn by the client that realizes when the wearer falls. If a fall is detected, or if the wearer pushes the detector button, a message is transmitted to the non-profit’s SecurTek station and a call will be made to the two-way transmitting panel located within the wearer’s home to find out what help is required.

St. John Ambulance has been serving communities across Canada for over 125 years and is trusted in saving lives. The fall alert program is an extension of services already provided. It gives reassurance 24 hours a day, seven days a week to seniors and others who are living independently.

Pricing for the system is competitive at $35.99 plus HST per month. This includes the fall detector device. The service is provided on a month by month basis with no long-term contract to sign. Because St. John Ambulance is a non-profit organization, $0.27 of every dollar revenue goes back into community programs.

A presentation about how the medical alert system works, along with fall prevention and home safety and a history of St. John Ambulance, will be given at 1 pm on Thursday, June 7 at the Powell River branch location, 5907 Arbutus Avenue. For more information, readers can call 604.483.2250.
