Holly jolly jingle jog

Student fundraiser to benefit food bank

Brooks Secondary School students are organizing their third annual Jingle Jog and are asking the community to come out and help them support a good cause.

The run and walk takes place on Sunday, December 2, at Willingdon Beach. A five-kilometre walk starts at 9:30 am then the run starts at 10 am.

All money raised at the event and any food donations collected will go to Powell River Action Centre Food Bank which distributes food items to individuals and families in need who live in the Powell River area.

The run is organized by the students as part of a personal fitness course. They do everything from making posters to taking registrations to distributing water at the event. Last year’s event raised $1,550 for the food bank surpassing the previous year’s $1,300. The students hope to do even better this year.

Event organizers are calling this a strictly fun run and they hope runners and walkers will dress festively in red and white.

“It’s a great community event,” said Abby Lloyd, one of the student organizers. “And it’s for a good cause.”

Registration for the run is $10 per person or $20 for a family. The run will go along Willingdon Beach Trail to Laburnum Avenue, up the road and then back along the trail to where the event started.

All Brooks students are being encouraged to take part in the run. Both Chase Krompocker and Austyn Hollingsworth are assisting with the organization of the event.

“Last year about 175 students came out to the run,” said Chase.

“But we’re trying to get more out this year,” added Austyn.

Students can pre-register at the school’s main office and anyone can register in person at Avid Fitness Center, 102-7373 Duncan Street, or online. Runners can also register from 8 to 9:15 am on the day of the jog at the event’s starting point.
