Kings join compassion project

Fundraiser supports woman coping with rare disease

Powell River Kings are holding a special fundraiser in support of the Shannon Goss Compassion Project. The event will take place this weekend at 1:30 pm on Sunday, February 12 at Hap Parker Arena when the Kings play Coquitlam Express.

Goss, a mother with two children, has been diagnosed with Mytochondrial Myopathy, a rare, debilitating disease that attacks the body’s cells. Goss is unable to walk and is in constant pain. Her friend, Wendy Adams, started the compassion project to help Goss remain at home and spend as much time as possible with her children.

Goss has been approved for an electric wheelchair, but her home is unable to accommodate one because it is not accessible and there isn’t sufficient space for storage and recharging. Through the project, Goss has elicited the support of a number of Powell River businesses to build an addition onto her home. As well, teachers, staff, parents and students at Edgehill Elementary School, where Goss’s children attend, offer ongoing assistance to the family.

There are still costs to be met to see the project through to completion. An account has been opened at First Credit Union for people who wish to make a donation.

Interested readers who would like more information or who would be willing to offer labour or materials for the project can send an email to Adams at w5adams@telus.net.
