Lawn bowling is one of many activities people can take part in around Powell River. On Sunday, April 29, Powell River Lawn Bowling Club will open its doors and green to those new and experienced who want to play.

Club member Edith Holmes said newcomers to the sport can be taught how to play on opening day of the season. “It’s a very good interesting game,” she said. “On opening day we’ll have Fred Dunlop. He’ll be there for new members to take them on the green and show them how to throw the balls. It takes two or three times. You can’t just go straight in and say ‘yeah I like it.’ You’ve got to persist two or three times before you really go into it.”

Lawn bowling is a sport played by people of all ages and genders with balls coming in different widths and sizes to accommodate different hand sizes. New members will receive their first year dues at a reduced rate.

The club opens for the season at 2 pm on Sunday. The club is located at 5714 Marine Avenue in Townsite. Returning members should phone the club between 1 and 1:30 pm at 604.414.0890 and new bowlers should arrive at 1 pm on that day. People who wish to attend should wear or bring a pair of flat, smooth-soled shoes with no heels, to protect the green’s bowling surface.

For more information Dunlop or Holmes can be contacted at the club.
