A mother and daughter are donating their long hair to an organization that provides hairpieces to children who experience hair loss from medical issues.

Dana Gustafson and her nine-year-old daughter Dakota had their hair cut at Urban Roots recently. They each had to have at least 10-inches of hair to donate to Locks of Love, a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under the age of 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

Dana said she and Dakota were watching a television show which included a segment about a woman who was donating her hair to Locks of Love. “I asked Dakota if she would be interested in doing that with me,” Dana said. “She said, sure.”

Dakota’s hair was halfway down her back, so having it cut was a big change for her. “I am very happy my hair will be given to someone who needs it,” she said.

This isn’t the first time Dana has done something involving her hair to help others. About seven years ago, she had her head shaved to show support for Tla’Amin (Sliammon) First Nation community members who were undergoing radiation treatments and lost their hair as a result. “Shaving it was really scary,” she said.
