New Years Greetings January 2 2013

Year ahead includes office move
New Years Greetings January 2 2013

Our 2013 is shaping up to be almost as busy as 2012. Supported by our new chief administrative officer Allan Radke and his capable staff, we will be working on a number of important issues all over the region.

The Emergency Preparedness Program needs to establish clear guidelines and to that end the regional district will lead an executive committee, which includes City of Powell River Mayor and Chief of Tla’amin (Sliammon) First Nation.

The regional board, city council and Sliammon Band Council are planning a Community-to-Community Forum to update everyone on what the region can expect once the treaty has been signed.

The Fire Services Review will be implemented in 2013 to ensure all the electoral areas have legislation and procedures in place to meet the latest standards. The Parks and Greenspace Implementation Advisory Committee should be reporting its recommendations to the board in 2013 and then an assessment will have to be made on how the board will implement them.

Texada Island and the regional board have to wrestle with some significant items such as airport certification, dock repair, the future of two improvement district fire departments, renovating Texada community hall, and replacing the concession, the house and a gathering place at Shelter Point Park.

Savary Island has to consider its dock repairs and a possible new community hall, while Area A will commence its work on an official community plan.

Areas B and C will be faced with the possible replacement of three fire vehicles in the next two years in order to meet insurance and standards legislation.

In 2013 we hope to be in our new office on Marine Avenue.

On behalf of the board, I wish you a happy and prosperous New Year.

Colin Palmer, chair
