FOOD PROGRAMS: Powell River Fire Rescue members decorated Putters Mini Golf last year for the first Christmas light event and will be doing so again this year. The light show will be open from December 12 to 23 and entry is by donation, with funds going to support food programs in local schools.

Powell River Fire Rescue (PRFR) is pleased to be able to partner with Putters Mini Golf for the second annual Christmas light event.

PRFR coordinator/public educator Tricia Greenwood said off-duty career and auxiliary firefighters are volunteering time to light up the mini golf course and be present for 12 Nights of Christmas from December 12 to 23, from 5 to 8 pm.

“Entry to the course is by donation, with funds going to support the Powell River Fire Fighters Charitable Society school food programs,” said Greenwood. “All donated funds stay local. Last year, we raised just over $3,000 for charity.”

Greenwood said Rudolf the reindeer is keeping an eye on the weather forecast and things are looking good for reindeer travel on Saturday, December 17, for special visitors that evening. She added that hot drinks, snacks and ice cream (for the brave) are available for purchase. There will be no golfing because golf balls and Christmas lights don’t mix.

Speaking on behalf of his family, Putters owner Dave Formosa said the business is excited to host the second annual Light up the Park event.

“Last year’s support from the community, our staff and the volunteers from Powell River Fire Rescue made it a great success,” said Formosa. “We hope to continue to host this fun family event for years to come.

“Please come down and enjoy our spectacular light display while supporting our firefighters’ local charity of choice.”

Westview Elementary School has indicated that with the support of the firefighters charitable society, it is able to serve breakfast to students every morning before school.

“The generous donation of breakfast food items allows us to feed hungry students smoothies, toast, cereal and fresh fruits,” according to a statement from the school. “There are an increasing number of students attending breakfast club and with the generous support from the society, we are able to give students a good start to their day.”

Brooks Offsite Program stated: “Thank you again for such an important cause that positively affects not only the students, but their families as well. For some students, this is, unfortunately, the only real meal in a day that they eat. This program is very much needed. How can they learn if they are hungry? It takes a whole community to raise a child and this important fundraising event stays in Powell River.”

Assumption School stated: “Having biweekly food deliveries from the firefighters charitable society has been an immense help to us. As prices of groceries, gas and everything else continue to rise, we see a greater need to feed students at school. Knowing that we have a consistent, reliable source of healthy foods to supplement our breakfast and lunch programs has been amazing. We are so grateful.”

Edgehill Elementary School stated: “Jacob Hanson and the firefighters society have made an incredible impact at Edgehill School through their generous food donations for our students. Because of their donations, students are starting their day with full bellies and happy hearts. Thank you so much.”
