Powell River Public Library has celebrated its fifth anniversary.

On July 7, starting at 11:30 am, the summer reading club, made up of a number of young people, had a parade at the library, followed by cake outdoors on the patio by the front entrance.

At 2 pm, there was a Friends of the Library book sale, and at 2:30 pm robots were in the makerspace.

“Our staff have worked so hard to get us back open and that is a fantastic accomplishment to celebrate,” said chief librarian Rebecca Burbank. “After two years of virtual summer reading events, it was wonderful to see the summer reading club kick off this week. There were lots of smiling faces.

“It has really felt like we have arrived back where we were before the pandemic, a busy space for people to come together. It’s been wonderful to see so many people come out to celebrate today.”

Library board chair Rod Wiebe said it was great to have the library fully open and busy again.

“I am thankful for the hard work of staff to welcome the public back,” added Wiebe.

Burbank said while the library certainly had difficulties over the past two years during the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been so many more successes. She said this library is an upgrade that has shaped the way the community benefits from library services.
