Once again, organizers are inviting everyone to be “trapped” at Powell River Spot Prawn Festival.
The event is being held on Saturday, June 16, Father’s Day weekend, from 1 to 11 pm at the Wharf at Westview.
“More prawns to eat, more ways,” organizer Amy Sharp said. “And there will be food without prawns too.”
Chef demonstrations and the “much loved Black Box competition” featuring a celebrity guest chef, who will be announced later, were popular last year and are returning.
Marine biologist Anne Parkinson will be on hand to explain a sea-life display of “local critters from right here in our own pristine waters.”
Admission is free and there’ll be lots of activities for families including the Dunk-a-Dad dunk tank where children can help support this fun event by dropping a dad in the drink.
Also onsite will be a bouncy castle along with other PAC (parent advisory committee) child-activity booths.
Local entertainment on stage is scheduled throughout the day with a sunset dock party in the evening.
“People can learn from prawners why this area produces some of the very best prawns in the whole world,” Sharp explained, adding it will aid understanding about how prawning is not only sustainable but a solid part of the local food movement.
Although the areas immediately surrounding Westview are closed for prawning, there will be prawns from north of Lund. The areas close to the wharf may be re-opened before the festival.
Townsite Brewing will have a variety of tasty cold ones available in the beer garden from 3 to 11 pm.
“At our photo booth, you can let your inner prawn out to be trapped and photo-documented for later laughs,” Sharp said.
Readers can visit Tourism's website for ocean-theme photo contest submission details. Winning entries will be displayed at the event.
“We will see you at the Wharf at Westview,” Sharp said. “Bring the kids and be ready for a great day.”
