qathet School District sends SOGI correspondence to parents

School districts across the province concerned about safety after anti-SOGI protests in September

After school districts across BC saw unprecedented anti-SOGI and anti-LGBTQ2S+ protests and disruptions outside school board offices in September, BC School Trustees Association sent a letter to BC premier David Eby, requesting a meeting.

The letter stated: “Our priority is to ensure that all students learn in inclusive, welcoming schools, and that staff and boards of education are safe to do their work.”

qSD superintendent of school Dr. Jay Yule said during the board meeting on October 25, that a letter was sent to parents, indicating that qathet School District supports the LGTBQ2S+ community in schools and has sexual orientation and gender identities (SOGI) educational materials available.

qSD board chair Dale Lawson said that while she was away on district business, she was disheartened to hear stories shared directly from some colleagues across the province about the level of disruption outside schools and boardrooms. She wanted to reiterate that, “all schools are places where students deserve to be welcomed, included and respected in a safe environment.”

Lawson added that fortunately, qathet School District is not experiencing the same level of disruption.
