Rear Admiral to inspect cadets

Three corps combine for highlight event of the training year

Cadets will be ready for inspection by Rear Admiral Nigel Greenwood CMM, CD, Royal Canadian Navy Commander Maritime Forces Pacific on Saturday, May 26, for their annual ceremonial review.

Nigel grew up in Powell River and began his military career as a cadet in 64 Malaspina Sea Cadet Corps. He is retiring in June and this will be one of his last official functions.

He is the son of Frank and Margaret Greenwood and is part of a strong naval family. His father is a retired lieutenant commander with HMCS Discovery. Nigel has two brothers—Richard, who is also a rear admiral, and Kevin, a retired commander.

The parade will begin at 2:30 pm at Hap Parker Arena, Powell River Recreation Complex. The public is invited to attend the parade to view the highlight of the cadets’ training year.

“For several of the cadets this will be their final event as they are graduating from high school this year and will be moving onto university, jobs and their future,” said Larry Gemmill, administration officer for the army cadets. “Over the years many cadets have gone on to careers in the military and other professions and look back on their years in cadets, including summer camps, with fond memories and lasting friendships.”

It is unusual for the three cadet corps to combine their annual inspection, which are usually held at Timberlane Barracks, but this parade is at the request of the Rear Admiral.

The three corps are 64 Malaspina Sea Cadets, 22 Red Knight Squadron Air Cadets and 2781 British Columbia Regiment Army Cadets.

The parade will conclude in the evening with a cadet mess dinner to be held at Carlson Community Club for the cadets and visiting military representatives. For the newer cadets this will be their first formal mess dinner.
