Society celebrates first season

TrailRiders have been enthusiastically received by the community

Powell River Mobility Opportunities Society (PRMOS) is celebrating the end of its first season with a get together and recognition of all participants, their families and friends.

The event takes place from 5 to 7 pm on Wednesday, September 26 in the Cedar Room at Powell River Recreation Complex.

The society, which makes available TrailRiders to take people with disabilities out in the wilderness, had just shy of 100 participants, said spokeswoman CC Duncan. “Throughout the season, riders have been out on trails, made visits to a farm, been carried up rocks, over trees and on beaches in and around Powell River, enjoying what nature brings,” she said.

This season, the society had 22 riders registered, said Duncan. Some have not been able to go out because they need additional lateral support. Stephen Gueth, an occupational therapist at Powell River General Hospital, has been helping the society with trials of a specialized back rest to accommodate riders requiring this support. “PRMOS is also hoping to add a portable lift to that wish list which would improve safety and comfort in transfer from wheelchairs to TrailRiders and back,” said Duncan.

The event on Wednesday will include a slide show of photographs taken over the summer. It will also provide an opportunity to share suggestions of what can be improved for next season.
