Speaker sows seeds of food security

Group invites food activist to reflect on agriculture

Dan Jason, noted BC food activist, is coming to Powell River to speak about genetically modified organisms (GMOs), seed banks and the future of food at an event organized by Powell River Farmers’ Institute.

The evening presentation at Max Cameron Theatre begins at 7 pm on Wednesday, February 22, and is followed by a networking social in the Great Hall, Brooks Secondary School. Proceeds from the event will be used to support Seedy Saturday and help establish a community seed bank.

Jason founded Saltspring Seeds 20 years ago, which is an organic seed company on Salt Spring Island. He was also involved in the founding of Seeds of Diversity Canada and the Seed and Plant Sanctuary for Canada. These are both seed banks whose mission is to preserve varieties of vegetables and crops.

Jason is also an author of several books including The Whole Organic Food Book: Safe, Healthy Harvest from Your Garden to Your Plate and most recently Saving Seeds as if Our Lives Depended On It.

On Saturday, March 10, the institute will host Seedy Saturday at Powell River Recreation Complex. This annual community seed swap and garden fair brings together gardeners, young and old, in a spring celebration of seeds, gardens and community. There are many display tables, demonstrations and eight workshops. Last year Seedy Saturday was mostly contained within the Arbutus Room, but this year it has grown and will expand into the upper foyer area.

Everyone wishing to find out about issues affecting today’s agriculture is invited to Jason’s presentation. Admission is by donation. All attendees are asked to bring their own coffee cups.
